Around the Church

Greeter
Greeters are another friendly face intended to show our love for regular attendees as well as visitors.  The requirements for greeter are a warm heart, a handshake or hug, a smile, and a word of greeting or encouragement to each person coming through the door on Sunday morning.

Usher
Our ushers are often times the first face someone sees as they arrive for worship. A smile and a friendly greeting are all it takes to qualify for this ministry. Ushers are responsible for greeting people as they arrive at the church, providing directions and hospitality to assure they are comfortable. Ushers hand out bulletins, take up the offering during the service and count attendance.

Communion Preparation and Service
Communion is served the first Sunday each month and on special occasions. Communion stewards prepare the bread and juice ahead of time, set up the communion table at the altar, and assist the pastor when the elements are served.  Following the service they put the communion table away, take care of the elements and leave the linens where designated so they can be laundered. Communion is a special, sacred time for us and serving is a meaningful way to engage with our congregation.

Special Music
Do you have a musical talent that you wish to share with our congregation?  Special music is needed many times during the year for holiday and special liturgical Sundays that are on our calendar.  If you are a soloist, play a guitar or other instrument, would like to share a recital piece or other musical gift, our congregation would be grateful for you willingness to share.

Altar Flowers
Flowers are placed on the altar each Sunday. Some people designate a memorial or commemoration with their flowers but it isn’t required. You can give flowers just because you like seeing them on the altar if you want to. Or you can commemorate anniversaries, birthdays, deaths of loved ones, births of children and grandchildren, return of troops, or any other occasion.

Coffee Hour
United Methodists love fellowship and having the chance to visit over a cup of coffee and some snacks. We have coffee hour each Sunday immediately following the worship service. You can provide homemade or purchased snacks.  The church provides the coffee and punch but you can bring other beverages if you want to. The great thing about coffee hour is that everyone appreciates the fact you have a warm cup of coffee and a snack ready for them after worship. You can get a friend or two to help you, do it yourself, or get your whole family involved. Make the coffee before Sunday school, step out of worship during the last hymn to set out the rest of the refreshments and you are all set. Someone is always around at the end to help you clean up or take the leftovers off your hands.

Community Garden
The idea for a community garden was revealed during an evening study in the spring of 2008.  During a discussion about how we can ‘do good for others’ several of our members realized we can support our food pantry with fresh garden vegetables using the property and volunteer resources we already have available. A garden plot was prepared, several people helped prepare the ground and plant vegetables. One of our members even donated manure to use as fertilizer. Volunteers prepare the garden, plant vegetables, weed and water, and then harvest the bounty for use by the food pantry and others. If you like gardening and want to get involved, let us know.

Prayer Garden
Our prayer garden provides a quiet place for reflection and prayer. If you have a green thumb and enjoy working in a flower garden, please contact us. We can always use some help selecting plantings or preparing and maintaining our flower beds.

Lawn Mowing
Lawn mowing takes about 2 ½ hours, once a week.  The church has a nice lawn mower for us to use. Since lawn mowing is a fair weather activity, you always have the opportunity to enjoy a pleasant day while you are sitting on the tractor.

Snow Removal
Do not be intimidated by the size of our parking lot.  You don’t have to shovel the whole thing.  Snow removal assures safe entry for our staff on weekdays and those attending church on Sunday morning.  Office hours start at 9:00am so you don’t even have to get up very early on snow days to come and shovel the sidewalks.  Snow shovels and ice melt compound are provided.  You just need to help us assure a clear pathway so no one slips and falls.
